What is cryptology ?
Cryptology is the study that involves encoding and decoding of plain text messages in order to prevent anyone from reading them without a key or guide. Historians have recorded the use of cryptology dating back to ancient Egypt wherein people developed secret codes soon after their written language was created.
Today, cryptology has evolved into something more complicated due to the complexity of encoding and decoding in computers. Since computers can break codes down, even those that seem unbreakable, many are choosing to use this device than go for traditional cryptology. In addition, cryptology is also responsible for protecting computer security; since passwords and codes are used in keeping hackers decrypt valuable information like credit card numbers, private plans and other vital personal info stored inside the computer.
One of the main reasons for encrypting data is to protect a country’s secret operations, particularly when in war. When this is the case, computer-produced codes for military purposes are more sophisticated to prevent illegal decryptors from gaining access to military plans, weaponry and other valuable information that may cause the downfall of a particular country.
Because every skilled encoder has an equivalent talented decoder, people in the field of cryptology continuously develop codes that would keep information secure. For a cryptographic engineer, it is important to decide on the best codes to use by researching extensively on the types of encryptions deciphered through history.
Some organizations rely on multiple types of cryptology to maximize the security of their systems. In these cases, when a knowledgeable intruder tries to break the existing code, he or she won’t have enough time to gather information since an other method of cryptology would be employed.
