What does a theory mean ?
Generally, a theory is used to refer to something unproven, may it be ideas or speculations. In mathematics and science, a theory is a testable idea used in explaining an occurrence, while theory in arts refers to a non-practical part of their work. Since the word “theory” means a wide variety of things, depending on context, it can sometimes be confusing.
The term theory has been used since 1592, referring to a scheme or concept. By 1630s, scientists used the word in describing an explanation based on testing and observation. Since then, the term ‘theory’ evolved to be used in different studies and in various contexts. For instance, in mathematics, theories are considered bodies of knowledge regarding a particular area in mathematics. Mathematicians usually include the term “set theory” within their work. In science, however, theories are created after testing or observing a possible solution to explain a phenomenon rationally. Scientists typically perform extensive testing before announcing that a theory is true or false.
In the arts, plenty of artists call their non-practical work as “theoretical”. Art criticism is also a part of the field of theory, wherein artists discuss different artwork and through such arguments, contribute to art theory.
The general public, however, considers theory as an idea, which requires testing to be proven as accurate or inaccurate. Sometimes, when an idea has been proven to be inaccurate, it is considered “just a theory”.
